[다시 보는 5만년의 역사] STORY : 별자리에 서사를 더해 이야기를 만들다

처음 제목을 보고 친구가 물어보았다.
왜 5만년이냐고?

왜 5만년일까?

인류가 태동하고 문화다운 문화를 이끌어 갔다 본 역사가 5만년이었다.
우주의 역사 132억년을 1년의 달력으로 보았을 때 인간의 역사는 겨우 8분남짓 정도밖에 되지 않으며, 인류가 문명 또는 문화라고 부를 수 있는 시간은 120초 정도인 것 같다.

그럼 우리는 왜 이런 역사를 공부하는 것일까 고민하게 된다.
나 스스로 답을 내려보면,
자신에 대해서 알고 인정하고 숙고하는 일은

스스로 존재의 의미를 찾으려 의미있는 삶을 살아가려는 노력이라고 생각한다.

인류와 우주의 역사를 알고 공부하고 숙고하는 것또한

거대한 흐름속의 하나의 존재로서 의미를 찾고 살아가는 노력이 아닐까 답을 내려본다.

 

그리고 제3자처럼 방관자처럼 또는 역사의 일부를 이루고 있는 요소로서 책을 읽어내려가기 시작했다.

이 책은 사회적 별자리와 서사를 기준으로
시간의 흐름을 명명하며 시기별로 어떤일이 생겼는지 담백한 문채로 서술해준다.

누군가의 편파적인 시선이 아닌 마치 관찰자로서 의미를 찾고 사건과 사건을 연결해 주는 흐름에서

그 나름대로의 재미를 찾을 수 있었다.

 

사회적 별자리라는 내용을 처음 보았을 때
나는 나름대로 이런 정의를 내렸다.
하나하나의 인간의 존재는 단지 큰 의미가 없는 존재이지만 (presence)
의미를 부여하고 연결함으로써 이야기가 구성이 되고 (contect)
물리적 세계가 아닌 정신세계의 통합적 연결이 되면서 (network)
역사가 이어진다고 한다.

 

책의 초반에 작가는 이런말을 한다.
물리학 법칙을 빗대어 이야기하면 ‘한정된 공간에서 엔트로피(불확실성)은 무한으로 증가한다.’ 고

지구라는 한정된 공간에서 인류가 태동하고 한정된 공간에서 예측할 수 있지만

예측이 불가능한 일이 무한으로 일어나고 있다는 의미같다.
그래서 역사는 재미있는 것 같다. (그 어떤 소설보다 소설같은 이야기)

 

첫번째 챕터는 물리적 환경이었다.
환경이 조성이 되어야 인류가 태동을 시작할 수 있는데 그 환경이라는 것이 무엇이었을까?
당연히 첫번째는 생존할 수 있는 환경이었을 것이고, 두 손을 쓰면서 만들어낸 도구가 두번째 이다. 그리고 진정한 인간의 역사의 시작의 가장 큰 환경은 바로 언어였다.

언어는 단순히 정보를 전달하는 역할을 할 뿐이 아니다. 동일한 언어는 정체성을 형성하고 환경을 기반으로 형성된 언어는 아주 많은 의미를 담고 있었을 것이다. 그러다가 문자가 형성되면서 시공간을 뛰어넘는 정보의 교류가 시작된다.

그리고 내가 생각한 인류의 가장 큰 발명은
‘신뢰’ 였다. (신용은 인간이 만든 거대한 사기극이라는 말이 일리가 있다)

미래를 중신에 놓고 거래를 하기 시작한다.
신뢰는 가능성있는 미래를 담보로 하는 약속의 연장선이었다. 봄에 연장을 거래하면서 신뢰를 기반으로 가을에는 곡식을 주겠다고 약속한다. 환경적으로 가을에는 곡식이 결실을 맺을 거라는 정보를 알고, 이 사람이 그 약속을 기억하고 이행할 것이라는 믿음을 통해 신뢰거래가 생겨난다.

당연하게 여기고 있는 일들의 시작을 찾아보면 어떻게 이런일이 생길수 있을까 하는 생각이 든다. 그부분이 너무 재미있는 포인트 인 것 같다.


그리고 흘러가 커다란 문화가 문명이 되어 뻗어나가고
세상에 우리(공동체적 생각)외의 다른 사람들이 존재한다는 것을 알게된다.
(아마 중간지대의 사람들은 알고있었고 다양한 것들을 전달했겠지만 알고있는것과 알고있음을 인지하는것은 다르다는 생각이다)
우물안의 개구리가 세상을 만나게 되는 순간이었다.

 

그리고 제국시대가 된다.

 

제국시대
그냥 역사속에 당연하게 여기던 이 부분은 생각보다 신기하고 재미있는 부분이 많았다. 그렇게나 넓은 땅을 어떻게 일관되게 통치할 수 있었을까?
통치기관은 그 한계를 어떻게 극복했을까?

언어가 시간이 지나면서 문자와 글로 발전을 한다.
정보의 전달은 인간이 갈 수 있는 거리로 빨라진다.
속도가 빨라지고 균일하게 측정하는 측정법(수학)이 함께 발달한다.

수학의 발달과 함께
동등한 가치를 주고받는 교역이 활발하게 이루어진다.
그리고 약속, 믿음, 신뢰를 바탕으로 주화가 탄생한다.

인간이 달려서 갈 수있는 거리의 정보전달 속도가
말을 길들이며 말이 갈 수 있는 거리로 바뀌고
불필요한 과정을 생략하고 중간중간 말을 바꿔탈 수 있는 교역소가 생기며
정보 전달을 더더욱 빨라지고, 통치 기관의 영역이 늘어나고
단일화된 제국이 생긴다.

돈, 수학, 메세지전달속도 상승, 관리전략, 군사기술이 발달하면서
거대서사의 시작이다.

이 책의 매력은 동서양에서 동시다발적으로 나타나는 여러 서사의 연결고리를 찾아서 말도안되는 인과관계를 말이 되도록 만들어 준다.

 

어떻게 몽고제국의 유럽 코앞에서 멈춘 발걸음이 십자군을 강하게 만들었고,
왜 강대한 항해술을 가졌던 중국보다 후발주자 서양나라들이 세계를 재패했으며,
어떻게 청나라의 정책이 미국을 탄생하게 만들었는지
긴 서사의 흐름을 통해 인과의 필연성을 보여준다.

 

섞물리기(Bleshing)의 과정은 서사의 일부분이다.
(섞다+맞물리다 (blending+meshing)의합성어 이며, 이보다 역사의 땋음을 잘 표현하는 말이 없는 것 같다)

그렇게 섞물리기는 서사의 과정에 필수적으로 나타난다.
그 문화에 어울리는 서사를 선택하고 아닌 서사는 버리는 취사선택을 하면서 서사는 그 모습을 계속바꾸면서 지금까지 내려온다.

 

긴 대서사의 흐름을 한권의 책으로 엿볼 수 있었다.
배경지식이 많지 않아서 읽는 도중 모르는 사건 인물들을 찾아보느라 종종 멈추게 되었지만 그또한 독서의 재미이지 않을까.

21세기... 앞으로의 사회적 별자리는 어떤 이름으로 불리게 될까 기대하며 마무리한다.


[서평] 다시보는 5만년의 역사

 

The first time my friend saw the title, he asked.
Why 50,000 years?

Why 50,000 years?

The history of humanity was born and led a culture that was culturally 50,000 years old.
When looking at 13.2 billion years of cosmic history on a one-year calendar, human history is only about eight minutes long, and it seems that humans can call it civilization or culture for about 120 seconds.

 

Then I wonder why I am studying this history.
If I try to answer myself,
Knowing, acknowledging and pondering about myself
I think it is an effort to live a meaningful life to find the meaning of existence.

Knowing, studying and pondering the history of humanity and the universe
The answer is whether it is an effort to find meaning and live as a being in a huge stream.

 

Then, like a third party, I started to read books like bystanders or as part of history.

This book is based on social constellations and narratives.
Naming the passage of time, it describes in plain terms what happened by period.
Not someone's partiality, seeking meaning as an observer
In the flow that connects events to events
I could find my own fun.

 

When I first saw the contents of a social constellation
I came up with this definition in my own way.
Each human being is just a meaningless thing (presence)
By giving meaning and connecting, the story is composed (contect)
As an integrated connection of the mental world, not the physical world (network)
It is said that history continues.

 

At the beginning of the book, the author says this.
In the words of the laws of physics,'entropy (uncertainty) increases infinitely in a limited space.'

Humanity is born in a limited space called Earth,
It seems that it is possible to predict in a limited space, but unpredictable things are happening infinitely.
So history seems to be interesting. (It's more like a novel than any other novel)

 

The first chapter was about the physical environment.
Once the environment has been created, mankind can begin its birth. What was that environment?
Naturally, the first would have been a survivable environment, and the tool created with both hands was the second. And the biggest environment in the beginning of true human history was language.

Language is not just about conveying information. The same language formed an identity, and the language based on the environment would have had a lot of meaning. Then, as the characters are formed, the exchange of information beyond time and space begins.

 

And the biggest invention of mankind I think is
It was ‘trust’. (It makes sense that credit is a huge human-made scam)

People started trading with the future at the center.
Trust was an extension of the promise to secure a possible future.
People traded farmland tools in the spring and promised to give grain in the fall based on trust. Environmentally, in the fall, trust was created by knowing that grain would bear fruit and trusting that this person would remember and fulfill the promise.

When I find the beginning of the things I take for granted, I think how this might happen. That part seems to be a very interesting point.

 

And the great culture has grown into a civilization
People have learned that there are people outside of us (community thoughts) in the world.
(Maybe people in the mid-zone knew and delivered a variety of things, but I think it's different to know what you know and what you know)
It was the moment when the frog in the well met the world.

 

And it becomes the empire era.

 

Imperial era

This part that was taken for granted in history was more interesting than I thought. How was it possible to consistently rule such a vast land?

How did the governing body overcome the limitations?

 

Language develops in the form of letters over time.

The transmission of information is accelerated to the distance that humans can go.

Faster and more uniform measurement methods (math) develop together.

 

With the development of mathematics
Trade in equal value is active.
And coins are born based on promise, faith, and trust.

The speed at which humans can run and communicate
Tame the horse, it changes to the distance the horse can go,
There is a trading post where you can skip the unnecessary process and change words in the middle.
The communication of information becomes faster, the scope of the governing body increases,
A unified empire is created.

As money, mathematics, message delivery speed rise, management strategy, and military skills develop,
It is the beginning of a great epic.

 

The charm of this book is to find a link between several narratives that appear simultaneously in the East and the West, and make a nonsense causal relationship into words.


How did the steps of the Mongol Empire stop in front of Europe made the Crusade stronger,
Why Western countries have defeated the world as a latecomer than China, which has strong sailing technology,
How the Qing Dynasty's policies made America born
It shows the necessity of causality through the long epic flow.

 

The Bleshing process is part of the narrative.
(bleshing is a compound word of blending and meshing, and there seems to be no word that expresses the braid of history better than this)

So bleshing is essential in the narrative process.
As the narrative continues to change its appearance, it descends so far, while choosing a narrative that suits the culture and discarding the narrative,


I could glimpse the flow of the long epic with a book.
I didn't have much background knowledge, so I often stopped looking for events and characters I didn't know while reading, but I think it's also fun to read.

21st century... What name will be called the social constellation in the future.
