모두 거짓말을 한다.
구글 검색이 그토록 귀중한 이유는 데이터가 많아서가 아니다. 사람들이 솔직한 생각을 내놓기 때문이다.

디지털 자백약

누구나 페르소나, 사회적인 가면을 쓰고 이 세상을 살아간다. 그리고 그 속내를 차마 가까운 사람들에게 까지 꺼내놓지 못하는 사람들이 다수 일 것이다.
이사람들의 대나무 숲은 다름아닌 구글의 검색창이다.
반짝이는 커서뿐인 뽀얀 창 앞에서 그들은 몰래 그들의 진심을 꺼내놓고는 후련한 마음으로 자리를 뜰 지도 모른다.
아무도 모를것이라는 마음에 본심을 꺼내놓고 난 자리에는 바람이 대나무 숲 깊숙하게 본심을 전달한다. 그 마지막 자리는 구글의 빅 데이터이다.

이 책에서의 흥미로운 점은 트럼프의 대선을 예측했다는 점이다.
15년 전 사람들은 미국최초의 흑인 대통령에 열광했으며 5년전에는 미국최초의 여성대통령에 열광할 준비를 하고 있었다.
두근거리는 마음으로 화려한 선물의 포장을 뜯었을 때
그들은 예측의 빗나감을 인정할 수 없었고, 큰 기대감과 함께 큰 실망을 했을 것이 틀림없다.

하지만 구글의 빅데이터를 연구하던 저자는 이미 예견된 결과를 차근히 분석해 나갔다.
미국내에서는 아무리 인종차별이 완화되고 흑인 대통령이 당선이 되었으나,
오바마 대통령이 연설을 할 때마다 ‘깜둥이 농담’의 검색량이 증가했다.
이렇게 구글 검색창에는 악의와 미움이 확연하게 드러나고 있었다.
트럼프 지지율이 높은 지역은 ‘깜둥이’라는 구글 검색이 가장 많았던 지역이다.

구글검색은 인종주의가 있는 지역에 대한 우리의 편견을 부셨다.
설문조사에서는 남부와 공화당이 인종주의를 주로 이룬다고 생각하나,
구글의 검색은 동서로 구분되어 있음을 확연하게 보여주었다.

빅데이터
너무 매력적이지 않은가!
‘Lie to me’에서 “말할 필요 없어.” 라고 라이트만 박사가 말한 것 처럼
진실을 말할 필요 없어! 왜냐하면 너의 구글검색기록이 너에 대해서 이미 말해주고 있거든!

우리가 할머니의 말씀, 연장자의 말씀을 귀담아 듣는 이유는 무엇일까?
그 분 자체가 빅데이터 이기 때문이다.
많은 직간접 경험이 그들의 이야기에 무게감을 준다.

설문조사는 내가 상대방에게 좋은사람으로 비춰지고 싶은 욕구 때문에
나도 모르게 거짓말을 하게 된다.
(설득의 심리학에서도 매력적인 여성앞에서 더 문화적인 조사가 나온다는 실험이 있다.)
하지만 아무도 없는 어두운 방 하얗게 비어있는 구글검색창에서는 내 속내를 끄집어 내고 싶은 욕구가 샘솓는 것 같다.
그렇게 구글은 모든이들의 날것의 진심을 기존과 다른 방식으로 차곡차곡 쌓게 된다.


하지만 쌓인 데이터만으로는 어떠한 결과가 되지는 않는다.
그 데이터를 어떤 방향을 잡아 조사 해석하는 것이야 말로 인간의 심리를 알아가는 단계의 하나가 될 것이다.
앞으로 더 많은 데이터들이 다양한 방식으로 쌓이게 될 것이고
그 데이터들을 어떻게 가공하는지가 중요해 질 것이다. 마크 주커버그 처럼 말이다.


페이스북은 뉴스피드를 업데이트하고 유저들에게 큰 저항을 받았다.
뉴스피드를 내리라는 엄청난 항의를 받았으나 페이스북을 그들의 생각을 밀고나갔다.
데이터는 거짓말을 하지 않는다.

사람들이 아무리 뉴스피드가 잘못되었고 다운데이트 하라는 항의를 받았으나 주커버그는 전혀 동요하지 않았다.
왜냐하면 뉴스피드 업데이트 이후에 사람들의 페이스북 체류시간이 거의 두배가 뛰었다.
말로는 불평을 하고 저항을 하지만 그들의 데이터는 거짓말을 하지 않는다.
말보다는 행동을 봐야하고, 데이터는 거짓말을 하지 않는다는 것.


아무리 빅데이터를 강조하고, 사람들이 진실을 말하는 것을 종합하는 실험을 해도 중요한 것이 있다.
아무리 가난한 나라에도 부자들의 동네가 있고,
학교중퇴율이 높은 지역에서도 중퇴율이 거의 없는 학교가 있으며,
빈부격차가 심한 어느 지역에서도 일부지역은 가난한 사람이 성공할 확률이 높은 구역이 있다.

우리는 세상이 복잡하다는 것을 인정해야만 한다.

그렇기 때문에 빅데이터를 기반으로 하는 클로즈업조사가 필요한 것이고
클로즈업을 통해 세상의 복잡성을 인정하고, 다양성을 존중하며
획일화된 데이터 보다는 맥락에 맞춘 결과의 해석이 필요한 것이라 생각한다.


얼마나 많은 사람들이 책을 끝까지 읽을까?

저자는 책의 마무리를 너무 재미있게 했다. 그래서 나만읽고 싶은 마음이 들었다.
저자는 훌륭한 결론을 고민했다. 하지만 빅데이터를 통해서 이 책을 끝까지 읽을 사람이 얼마 없다는 것을 예측했다.
그리고 이렇게 말한다. 빅데이터가 말하기를 여기까지 읽을 사람은 얼마없으니 그냥 마무리 하겠다고.

그리고 나도 이렇게 생각한다.
얼마나 많은 사람들이 이 글을 클릭하고 여기까지 읽을지 모르지만
읽을 사람은 극 소수일 테니 여기까지 쓰겠다.

Their bamboo forest is nothing but Google's search box. They may put out their honest hearts in front of the immaculate window with only a shiny cursor, and then sneak out of the seat.
The wind conveys the true spirit deep into the bamboo forest where no one knows it. The last place is Google's big data.

The interesting thing about this book is that it predicted Trump's presidential election.
Fifteen years ago, people were enthusiastic about America's first African-American president, and five years ago, they were getting ready to be enthusiastic about America's first woman president.
When they opened the package of brilliant gifts with a thrilling heart, they could not admit the missed predictions, and they must have been disappointed with great expectations.

However, the author who was studying Google's big data carefully analyzed the predicted results.
Racial discrimination has been alleviated in the United States, and the black president has been elected, but every time President Obama speaks, the search volume of “black jokes” has increased in some areas.
In this way, hate and malice were clearly revealed in the Google search box.
The region with the highest Trump approval rate was the region with the most Google searches for “blackie”.

Google search broke our prejudice against racist areas.
Traditional surveys show that the South and Republicans are predominantly racist, but Google's search clearly shows that it is divided into East and West.

Why do we listen to the words of the grandmother and the elderly?
This is because she herself is big data.
Many direct and indirect experiences add weight to their stories.

In the survey, people lied about themselves unknowingly because of desires to be seen as a good person.
(Even in the psychology of persuasion, there is an experiment that people want to look more culturally in front of attractive women.)

However, in the dark room where there is no one, it seems that the desire to pull out the inside is evident in the white empty Google search box.
In this way, Google builds up the heart of everyone's rawness in a different way.

However, the accumulated data alone does not give any results.
It is a step to understand human psychology by taking a certain direction and interpreting the data.
In the future, more data will be accumulated in various ways and how to process the data will become important. Like Mark Zuckerberg.


Data doesn't lie.

Facebook updated the news feed and received great resistance from users.
Despite a huge protest against the news feed, Facebook pushed their thoughts.
Data doesn't lie.

No matter how bad the news feed was and no matter hard people were protested to get it back, but Zuckerberg wasn't shaken at all.
Because after the news feed was updated, people's Facebook stayed almost doubled.
People complain and resist in words, but their data doesn't lie.
You have to see action rather than words.
Remember “Data doesn't lie”.

No matter how emphasizing big data and experimenting with synthesizing people telling the truth, there is something important.
No matter how poor the country, there are rich people's neighborhoods,
Even in areas with high dropout rates, some schools have little dropout rates,
In any region with a high gap between rich and poor, some regions have areas where the poor are more likely to succeed.


We must admit that the world is complicated.

That is why close-up surveys based on big data are necessary.
Recognizing the complexity of the world through close-ups, respecting diversity,
I think it is necessary to interpret the results in context rather than uniform data.

How many people read the book to the end?

The author made the book's ending so much fun. So I wanted it to be read only by myself.
The author considered a great conclusion. However, he predicted that few people could read this book through the big data.
And he says, “Big Data says there are only a few people to read so far, so I'm just going to finish like this”.

And I think so.
I don't know how many people will click on this article and read this far, but there are very few people who will read so far, so I'll write it here.
